Factors to Consider When Buying a computer How much can you afford to pay for a computer? Prices of personal computers range from a few hundred to thousands of euros. The more features included and higher speed computers are more expensive. Also, personal computers soon become outdated. So the best computer on the market won’t always be so. Where will your PC be used? If you are planning on using it only at home, a desktop computer will be suitable. However, if you will need to take it with you, you should consider purchasing a laptop computer. What are you going to use the computer for? Are you going to use your PC to prepare letters and reports? Analyse numeric and financial data? Prepare presentations? Access the Internet? Listen to music? Create and work with graphics? For each option there are different applications which can do different things. Make a list of the applications you think you will need, and make sure your computer comes equipped with them. What kind of microprocessor are you going to need? Selecting the right microprocessor is very important. Processing speed should probably be your first consideration. The higher the number of gigahertz (GHz), the faster the processor will open and run programs. How much memory will you need? PCs come with around 512 MB of RAM (Random Access Memory). Make certain your PC has sufficient RAM to run the software you will be using. Which input devices will you use? Normal input devices are a keyboard and a mouse. Before buying a PC, you may want to test the keyboard and mouse for comfort and ease of use. Will you need a printer? The two most popular types of printer are ink-jet printers and laser printers. Ink-jets are more affordable than laser printers, although the ink cartridges can be expensive to replace. Computers are expensive whether you are buying a basic model or a top-of-the-line system. So if you plan ahead and consider the factors mentioned above, your computer should help you whatever your needs should be.

The Bushnell BackTrack Have you ever been to Dublin airport and forgotten where you parked your car? Or have you been to Oxegen and spent hours wandering around in the night because you couldnt remember where you pitched your tent? Yes? Well, those days are over thanks to the Bushnell BackTrack! The BackTrack is basically a compass with a GPS attached. A GPS receiver calculates its position by carefully timing the signals sent by the GPS satellites high above the Earth. Each satellite continually transmits messages containing the time the message was sent and the precise orbital information. Once you set a location in the BackTrack it will guide you back to the location with directional arrows and distance estimations as your guide. What could be simpler! GPS receivers come in a variety of formats, from devices integrated into cars, phones, and watches. It's a simple idea and it seem's pretty simple to use, yet it utilizes the latest digital technology. You only have two buttons to contend with - You turn it on, you set your location and then you navigate back to it. And for the fashion-concious it's available in 3 fancy colours: tech grey, orange and green. Unlike a regular GPS the maps never need to be updated and it works in any country in any environment. It's also weather resistant and is compact enough to fit into your pocket. So far the BackTrack has been marketed towards hikers and campers but theres no reason why the BackTrack shouldnt have an appeal to a wider market (especially if you're a sieve-head like me) and it wouldnt be a bad Christmas prezzie for Dad's either! Its available to buy from €45 in all good stockists. See it here: http://www.bushnell.com/gps/gps_backtrack.cfm
